The headteacher at my new school just so happened to be a very dear friend of long standing with whom I had lived some 20 years previously in Australia. While that may sound nepotistic, she too was new to the post. I was interviewed and subsequently employed by the woman who had established the school and the former headteacher so I knew I’d got the job on my own merits. Nonetheless it was a remarkable twist of fate that we were working together and within a few months I myself was appointed deputy head. Again, if anyone had told me . . .
