The whole wedding thing was a shock to her. Because the date they set was two months after they told people they were getting married, the assumption was that she was pregnant, and no-one had any compunction in asking her if that was the case. At first she was appalled by the rudeness of the question; then she got used to it. Good thing, because throughout the years of their marriage, they were constantly asked when they would have children. The response “Never” didn’t stop the questioning. And questioners obviously considered the couple to be selfish or just plain wrong.
