The Norse end-of-the-world scenario is my favorite. It begins with the Fimbulwinter, three terrible winters in a row, one right after the other, in which snow never stops falling.

The thing about snow is this: it has such a huge impact on everything, but it's also absolutely silent. Not only is it quiet itself, it tends to absorb and muffle other sounds. The Fimbulwinter is a silent and gentle apocalypse. If I were in charge, I would leave out all the noisy "Twilight of the Gods" stuff that follows, and just have the world end in snowfall.
