I was fishing, traveling from one favorite spot to another, when I first spotted the thing. By the shadow lying on the oceanís surface I guessed it to be a large pelican resting in the sun, but when it suddenly moved I realized it was too big to be a bird. It was like nothing I had ever seen. The way it struck at the water with spindly fore flippers as it glided toward an oncoming wave was as frightening as it was interesting. I dove under the creature and quietly surfaced behind the swell to watch its next move.
