It was a cold night, and both Fay and Anna were glad when the big sedan stopped for them. As usual, Anna climbed in the back, and Fay slid in beside the driver with a flirtatious smile. He smiled back and the big, heavy car turned back onto the dark road, the headlamps lighting the trees at the side. The car stopped, and Anna realized that her mother and the driver had gotten into a fight. “Run, Anna!” Fay cried out. “Run as fast as you can!” For once, Anna obeyed, scrambling into the dark woods. It seemed safer there.
