The liquor importers work in a nondescript building in an industrial part of the city, but their family owns one of the grandest houses in the city. The house is a museum and is famous for surviving the great earthquake and fire of 1906. There is a crack in the wall by the sweeping staircase which has never been repaired. It’s family tradition to remember that day the fire stopped just a block away from the mansion. Every year, the family banishes the public to hold a grand Christmas party, complete with tree – a bridge to the past.
