She never says what she doesn’t mean. Yet people always ask, “Are you sure?” when she has agreed to do something. Yes, she thinks, I’m sure. Or I wouldn’t have said anything. But she smiles. And if she doesn’t want to do something, she just says so. “I’m sorry, I don’t pick people up at the airport anymore. But you’re welcome to come here for a drink after you arrive.” She has a very well-stocked bar, possibly from working for a liquor importer for so many years. Or maybe just because.
