Amélie was unused to these little assemblages. She'd grow up in the Swiss Alps, and found such large gatherings a little overwhelming. She scanned the room for her friend Louisa, who she found conversing with a very handsome newcomer. Louisa was fetching, effervescent, her best friend. They'd met in her finishing school in the Alps above Geneva. The rest of the girls had been so dreary, but she'd hit it off immediately. Louisa was currently considered the most desirable debutante in Manhattan, but Amélie was more than capable of keeping up, with her enchanting presence.
